Asbestos Analysts Testing (AAT) Program

The Asbestos Analysts Testing program is the proficiency testing program for the Asbestos Analysts Registry. Only analysts enrolled in the AAR program can participate in the AAT program.  The program was designed for individual asbestos analysts performing fiber-counting of membrane filters by phase contrast microscopy on the job site.  Samples are provided on a quarterly basis with the opportunity for the analyst to override his/her scores by participating in the retest round. Asbestos samples are generated and distributed by SRI International, with data analysis performed by the AIHA Registry Programs

Who should participate in the AAT Program?

Any analyst enrolled in the AAR program must successfully participate in the AAT programs.  Analysts who perform fiber counting procedures at the job site need assurance of the quality of their work, which can be provided by this program through adherence to the AAR program requirements. Proficient performance is a requirement for recognition as an AAR board approved analyst and inclusion on the registry web list.

Who can participate in the AAT?

The AAT Program is the proficiency testing program for fiber counting analysts who desire to be included on the Asbestos Analysts Registry (AAR). Only analysts enrolled in the AAR may participate in the AAT program.  Participating organizations can have analysts that work in the laboratory or the field.

How does the AAT program work?

When an organization enrolls in the AAR Program each of their registered analysts are enrolled in the AAT program. Analysts can also be added to the enrollment of an approved organization. Samples are shipped quarterly to the organization's AAT contact. One sample kit can be analyzed up to five analysts. Sample analysis must be performed using the latest version of the NIOSH 7400 method for counting fibers. Analytical procedures must be in compliance with the OSHA asbestos standard, 29 CFR 1910.1001. Every enrolled analyst is assigned a unique ID number that is used with the organization ID number to enter their results into the AAT Data Entry Portal by the deadline.   AAT Performance Results Reports display the proficiency results and status of each enrolled analyst and are posted to the portal within 10 business days of the round closing.
